Giving Voice to Victims: Register of Damage Hears Firsthand Accounts of War’s Impact

During their visit to Kyiv, the Board and Executive Director of the Register of Damage for Ukraine met with victims of Russia’s aggression and representatives of civil society organisations and networks supporting victims. The meeting provided an opportunity to present the Register’s mandate and hear firsthand accounts from those affected by the war.

The Register of Damage, established to record claims for damage caused by Russia’s aggression, plays a crucial role in the international effort to ensure accountability and justice for Ukraine and war-affected individuals and entities. During the meeting, victims shared their experiences, highlighting the devastating impact of the war on individuals and communities. Civil society representatives emphasised the importance of the Register as a step towards compensation and long-term redress.

“The voices of those directly impacted must be at the heart of our work,” said the Executive Director of the Register, Markiyan Kliuchkovskyi. “Hearing their stories strengthens our commitment to ensuring that all legitimate claims are documented and preserved,” he added.

The Chair of the Board of the Register, Robert Spano, emphasised that "filing a claim with the Register is more than just documenting damage—it is an act of resilience and a step towards justice. It is a way for those affected to fight back, ensuring their losses are acknowledged and accountability is pursued."

The Register will continue engaging with victims, civil society, and stakeholders as it advances its mission to facilitate future compensation and justice efforts.
